My assumption for how the Republican line of defense plays out.
There is no collusion, but collusion is not a crime, and if one obstructs justice in order to cover up an action that is not a crime it means that the obstruction is also not a crime, and if obstruction is a crime it is not a high enough crime to warrant impeachment, and if it is a high enough crime to warrant impeachment a censure would be more appropriate, and if impeachment is appropriate then the vote to impeach should have a higher threshold, and if the vote to impeach reaches that threshold then impeachment does not require the president to be removed from office, and if the president is required to be removed from office it should only be at the end of his term, and if the president must be removed at the end of his term he should not be barred from running for re-election, and if the president must be barred from running for re-election then the president’s party must be allowed to name his successor since he was in fact removed, and if he cannot name his successor then America will be without leadership, and if America has no leadership then it has no government, and if America has no government then it has no laws, and if it has no laws then there is nothing the president could have broken, therefore the president is innocent.
